FK Žalgiris were founded in Vilnius in 1947 and are the most successful club in Lithuania, with a long list of A Lyga championships and Lithuanian Cups.

The name Žalgiris is the Lithuanian form of Grunwald, the battle of 1410 at which the Teutonic Order was defeated, and it carries considerable national weight. The club plays in green and white at the LFF Stadium in Vilnius.

Žalgiris is a regular in the early rounds of European competition and has reached the Europa Conference League group stage.
