Enrique Sánchez Flores, known as Quique Flores, was born in Madrid on 5 February 1965 into a famous artistic family; his mother, Carmen Flores, was a sister of the singer Lola Flores, and his father was the footballer Isidro Flores. He played as a full-back for Valencia and Real Madrid and was capped by Spain. As a coach he made his name at Getafe, whom he took into the top flight and to a Copa del Rey final, and then at Valencia between 2005 and 2007.

Benfica appointed him in the summer of 2008 for what turned out to be a single season and 44 matches, of which he won 25. He won the Taça da Liga, the club's first trophy in four years, coming through the competition without dropping a match, but finished third in the league and had a poor UEFA Cup campaign, winning only one of six matches. He left at the end of the season, his final game a 3-1 win over Belenenses on 23 May 2009, and was succeeded by Jorge Jesus, who won the championship at once with much the same squad.

He asked for a controlled, patient game with a deep, well-organised defensive block and quick transitions, and although the results were respectable the football was widely judged too cautious for the Luz. He was immediately hired by Atlético Madrid, where he won the Europa League and the UEFA Super Cup in 2010, and went on to coach Al-Ahli, Al-Ain, Watford, Espanyol, Shanghai Shenhua, Getafe again and Sevilla.
Coaching Philosophy

Quique's teams are built from the back: a deep, narrow 4-4-2 block that concedes territory, protects the centre and waits for the opponent to commit men forward. The moment the ball is won he wants it moved vertically in three or four passes, using the pace of the wide players and a striker attacking the space behind, and set pieces are drilled as a genuine weapon.
It was that model that carried Atlético Madrid to the 2010 Europa League and UEFA Super Cup, and at Benfica he asked for the same defensive discipline in a squad used to dominating possession.
