About the Club
Associacao Academica de Coimbra - Organismo Autonomo de Futebol is the football arm of the students' association of the University of Coimbra, which dates its foundation to 3 November 1887. That lineage makes Academica the oldest active football club in Portugal, although the football section itself began competing in 1912 and the autonomous OAF structure was created in the 1990s to run the professional team. Known as A Briosa, the club plays in black and white, colours inspired by the black capes worn by Coimbra students. Academica's outstanding achievement is the Portuguese Cup of 1938-39, and the side reached further cup finals in 1967 and 2012, the latter delivering a second Taca de Portugal. Home matches are played at the Estadio Cidade de Coimbra, opened in 2003 for the European Championship. Recent seasons have been spent in the lower tiers of Portuguese football.
