Gilberto Moraes Júnior emerged at Botafogo, for whom he made his senior debut in 2012, and passed through Internacional, Fiorentina, Hellas Verona, Latina and Vasco da Gama before three productive seasons at Fluminense established him as one of the more attack-minded right-backs in Brazilian football.

Benfica signed him in August 2020 to compete for the right-back position. He went straight into the side and played 36 official matches in his first season, providing width and crossing from deep. In 2021-22 he added a goalscoring dimension, scoring four times in 35 appearances, including two in the UEFA Champions League during the campaign that took the club to the quarter-finals.

His third season, 2022-23, brought a further 35 matches and four goals and ended with the Primeira Liga title, Benfica's first since 2019. He shared the position with Alexander Bah for much of that campaign.

With his contract expiring, Gilberto left in July 2023 for Bahia. He remained there for three seasons before joining Athletico Paranaense in 2026.
