Club Atlético River Plate was founded in Buenos Aires in May 1901 from the merger of two small clubs in the dockside south of the city, later moving to the northern district of Núñez, where the Estadio Antonio Vespucio Liberti, universally called El Monumental, has been its home since 1938. The white shirt crossed by a red diagonal sash produced the nickname La Banda, while heavy spending on players in the 1930s earned the enduring label Los Millonarios.

River is the most decorated club in Argentine football, holding more domestic league championships than any rival alongside four Copa Libertadores titles, in 1986, 1996, 2015 and 2018, and the 1986 Intercontinental Cup. Its meetings with Boca Juniors, the Superclásico, rank among the fiercest fixtures in world football. A shock relegation in 2011 was reversed at the first attempt, and the club competes in the Liga Profesional de Fútbol.
