A product of Norwegian football's grassroots, the midfielder began at Hareid before joining Hødd, where in 2012 he became the youngest player ever to win the Norwegian Cup, aged just 16.

He joined Molde in December 2015 and spent six seasons there, passing 100 first-team appearances and winning the Eliteserien in 2019. A move to Feyenoord followed in August 2021, and he started the 2022 UEFA Europa Conference League final in Tirana.

Benfica signed him in August 2022 on a five-year contract, and he has become one of the most reliable and tactically intelligent players in the squad, capable of operating in central midfield, on the wing or at full-back. He was crowned Benfica's Player of the Year with the Cosme Damião Award in 2025, and his honours at the Luz include the Primeira Liga in 2022-23, the Taça da Liga in 2024-25 and the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira in 2023 and 2025.

A Norway international since 2021, he stepped away from the national team in 2024 before returning in 2026 to take part in the FIFA World Cup.
