SL Benfica - Andreas Samaris, #22
CompareShare Card
Andreas Samaris was born on 13 June 1989 in Patras, Greece. He was formed at Panionios, where he made his name as a defensive midfielder, and moved to Olympiacos in 2013 before Benfica signed him in August 2014.
He spent seven seasons at Benfica, winning multiple league titles and establishing himself as a combative holding midfielder. He renewed his contract on 14 May 2019 in a deal running to 2023. By 2020/21 his role had reduced: he remained a squad option under Jorge Jesus and appeared intermittently across the league and cups. He did not play for Benfica in 2021/22, as his contract was terminated by mutual agreement on 31 August 2021.
He subsequently joined Fortuna Sittard in the Netherlands, and later played for Rio Ave and Coritiba. He was a Greece international and captained the national side.
