Benfica appointed him in May 2006 to succeed Ronald Koeman. He took charge of 49 matches and won nothing. In 2006/07 Benfica finished third behind Porto and Sporting, went out of the Champions League at the group stage and then out of the UEFA Cup, and he was dismissed in August 2007 after only two matches of the following season, the last a 1-1 draw at Leixões.
He was already the pragmatist he would later be famous for being: a solid defensive structure, few risks in possession and a game plan built around not losing. It did not satisfy Benfica, but it made him one of the most successful international coaches of his generation. He took charge of Greece from 2010 to 2014, reaching the last sixteen of the World Cup, and then of Portugal from 2014 to 2022, winning the European Championship in 2016 and the Nations League in 2019, the first major trophies in the country's history. He later coached Poland, Beşiktaş and Azerbaijan.
Coaching Philosophy
An electrical engineer by training, Santos coaches like one: a compact, low-risk block, two disciplined lines of four and a midfield whose first duty is to screen the back four. He accepts giving the ball away rather than the initiative, keeps the team narrow, and attacks in controlled bursts through the flanks or a single moment of individual quality.
It is football designed to win rather than to please, and it delivered Euro 2016 and the 2019 Nations League with Portugal after he had managed all three of Portugal's biggest clubs.
